oh. em. jeeeezy
Bic Runga rocks my socks :D
Anyone who does a full set completely solo whilst very pregnant and holding a guitar and standing in high heels for the entire show to boot deserves a medal and mAdD pRoPz (with sticky caps and a "z" and everything)! And dude it was a good show!
I'll update this entry more details and with photos after I get the virginian's :)
Bic Runga is quite adorable. She has a very nice smile which doesn't ever seem to grace the covers of her CDs. ANYHOW. The Korean, the Virginian and I got there quite early after a lengthy drive on the 405. Grabbed some beers upon being admitted into the venue and then found seats up on the balcony to watch the opener. I don't think any of us took much of a liking to the duo so we went back to the bar at the front to get two more beers (for the non-drivers) and fries (for all of us) before Bic went onstage.
We got spots right in the front, stage right. I was right up against the stage so I was able to use a speaker to help steady my camera for a couple of shots. She sounds great in person. Just her and two guitars: one acoustic, one electric. Yes, she was quite pregnant, but she was wearing an empire-waist dress and was holding a guitar so you could barely tell while she was performing.
Couple things I noticed about her? She keeps time sporadically with her right foot (very evident from my vantage point) and has a tendency to toss her head back--away from the mic--when her voice gets stronger.
Anyway, after the show was done we waited around so I could try buying one of the limited number of CDs she had brought on tour with her from her mother (yes, she brought her mother with her..!) but I'm afraid I was too slow. Virginian convinced me to go back into the show room to see if she had come down to mingle and yes, she had! I got a quick photo with her and that's it but it was all good. All in all, it was an excellent show well worth the money and rush hour traffic :)
Oh, and the Virginian managed to get a photo of the playlist (some girls at the front of the crowd had snagged it post-show) which you can view here. In case you have trouble reading it, here it is:
1. Something good
2. No crying no more
3. When I see you smile
4. Bursting Through
5. The Be all & end all
6. Say after Me
7. Blue Blue Heart
8. Honest Goodbyes
9. Get some sleep
10. Drive
11. Sway
--
12. Winning arrow
After Sway she "ended" the show. She came down a minute later for an encore, of course, at which point she played "Election Night" (request from the audience) followed by "Winning Arrow". To my surprise, she didn't play many songs from Birds...probably because there is no US release of it yet?
One thing bothered me a tiny bit...when she asked for requests everyone was like "SWAY!!! PLAY SWAY!!!" Dude she's going to play Sway whether it gets requested or not after all it's her most well-known song here in the United States. But that's me being nitpicky.
And oh I'm terribly, terribly sad that Winnie was unable to make it out! After all, it was she who had informed me of Bic's coming to LA!

i need to wake up early tomorrow!
Haha...yes I was somewhat inebriated when I typed that last post. Someone stupidly let me near a computer in my tipsy state and yes I made a drunken blog (something that hasn't happened in a while). It was a festive housewarming/birthday party made even more festive by an Adam who was trying (and succeeding) at getting me drunk.
Tomorrow is the Bic Runga concert and I am so freaking excited :)
My legs are achy in that almost pleasant "I just kicked my own butt" kind of way. I had a good, long workout this evening after work on the elliptical and treadmill and I can feel it.
On another note...
Wouldn't it be nice if we could a) only be around people that we like and b) only be around people that like us? While a is easier to achieve, it is indeed tricky, although not quite as tricky as b. Not that it matters because both are almost impossible. I mean as far as a goes, how many of us actually like all of our coworkers (actually, I like everyone I work with but that's besides the point) and friends of friends and classmates and family members and the list goes on and on.
But wouldn't it be nice?
And b, well, okay. Some people don't care. But for an insecure head case like me I'd like to know that the people I like being around like to be around me too.
Speaking of people I like, I feel like there are a bajillion people (okay maybe not quite that many) people I haven't seen in a long, long while that I'd like to see someday soon (well, if they want to see me!) but haven't because I am a bad friend. Or a lazy one. Same thing?
Okay so I really do need to get up early tomorrow (er, today). Goodnight moon.

putting my csi degree to use
the scene of the crime!
So I walked into the restroom at around 2 or 3pm this afternoon and WHOA there was stuff on the floor that was unlike any stuff I'd seen before! Now, I've had my share of somewhat gross bathroom adventures (diarrhea droplets on the toilet seat, drops of blood on the toilet and bathroom floor, random clouds of BO, and best of all, poop smears) but this one was unlike anything I'd seen. It was pretty gross, but it didn't smell at all when I walked in. Odd!
I escorted the virginian and korean coworkers into the restroom at the end of our workday (I think we leave later than the employees of the other companies that occupy our building so I figured it'd be okay to take them in) to see if they could figure out what it is. No help at all. Korean had no answer for me and the virginian's "helpful" suggestion was that perhaps "somebody's ass exploded". Since this answer was not to my satisfaction, the virginian suggested that I post pictures and ask everyone what they think the mysterious pools of dried stuff are. For all I know it could be food.
And here are the pictures! (letters correspond to letters in the photo up top ^)
Exhibit A
Exhibit B
Exhibit C
Exhibit D1
Exhibit D2 (a closer look)
What the hell is that stuff?
btw i realize that the images were titled incorrectly i'm just too lazy to fix them

Happy Pi day!
So yes Happy 3.14159 Day! So I sent "Happy Pi Day" texts to about 20 people but then I got sick of adding contacts (esp. since my phone has a 10 recipient per text limit) so yeah I didn't get around to messaging everyone :( Korean coworker, Virginian coworker and I got Mac D's apple pies to celebrate pi day. My second one is in the office fridge right now. (No real pies for us. Yahoo.)
Chilled with the Lamchop after work. Got dinner and hung out at his place for a while.
Been listening to lots of Bic Runga at work and Mazzy Star at le apartment.

low-key
The virginian coworker took a picture of me sitting on the floor (for whatever reason) applying smiths rosebud salve (my favorite lip balm). I'm running out.
Yesterday: Karaoke at Elvis?! (or perhaps Elvis!? I get it mixed up...) with a Lamchop, a Mamasaurus, a double D and his lovely girl Tydi plus her coworker/friend Carolyn (don't know how she spells her name) and high school friend Rob. Got to see Lam's new apartment (sort of new) which is awesome. Apartment-warming party soon?
Today: Going to help mistress April set up for her little sister's birthday party. Will kick it with the h00ntz at his new apartment afterward.
As terribly sexist as it is (and as much as I dislike the cocky bastard that is Kanye West) I like the song "Wouldn't get Far" by The Game/Kanye.

umm...
i hear female moans and groans through the vents right now.
no, i am not at home. i am at the office.
so. yeah. wtf.

narcolepsy
I crept into bed as soon as I got back to my apartment (sometime before 10pm) and only meant to close my eyes for a bit and ended up falling asleep.
So how is it that, even after 10+ hours of sleep, I still had trouble waking up this morning?
boy you're just a stupid bitch and girl you're just a no good dick

living vicariously
And to your right is a photo of me (in the tub) and the korean coworker (the one with the video camera) checking out the master math of the virginian coworker's (the one in the shower) new digs last Friday. Yeap, at the tender age of 28 the virginian coworker has become a *real* adult with a *real* mortgage and a very lovely new home.
Real estate envy? Just a bit!
I hear his washer and dryer have come in. Hoping to get another invite over because I like washers and dryers.

the voyeur in me
To the left is a photo of me being a voyeur at Grace's wine and cheese birthday party last Saturday. Yes, Adamada, this is why I couldn't make it (well, half of the reason).
Gorged myself on many different wines (sparkling wine, pinot noir, riesling) starting with a Gamay Rouge from the beloved V. Sattui winery in Napa! Whoever brought that bottle is my hero because, as we all know, you cannot find V. Sattui wine anywhere but the winery!
Yes I love wine. Ever since a fateful spring break involving a trip to Napa (which included a stop at V. Sattui, of course) with a very nice boy (who is no longer my boyfriend but is still nice) who made me into the wino I am today :)
Happy birthday to Grace (whose birthday is today!) and mucho thanks to her for inviting us over!
Am feeling a nice merlot buzz right now!
Craving for Oahu. It would be nice to visit again. I've been there a few times which means I wouldn't feel a pressing need to sightsee (no pressure at all!) and would be able to relax. Only pressing needs would be to visit Waiola (for the best shaved ice on the island), Zippy's (for chili rice), my aunt, and the beach!
And maybe Sarentos for the best beef carpaccio I've ever had..! Plus, their lobster ravioli wasn't half bad either...I was craving it for months after I'd returned to California. Must...go...back...

caffeine?
Am beginning to wonder if my sleeplessness was caused by the cup of tea that I had at around 8pm whilst at The Lost Bean with my dad's very old copy of Robert Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land. Perhaps? But it was (delicious peach-flavored) white tea, dammit! It's supposed to have less caffeine than green tea which is something I drink tons of (probably about 32 oz on average) at work up until 6 - 7pm!
Irritating!
Am currently on my third 16 oz cup of genmaicha right now. Am still very sleepy.
|

was not able to fall asleep until past 5am and holy crapping crack monkeys in a tree i am tired.
|
|
can't. fucking. sleep.
am going to be very sleepy and cranky at work tomorrow.

Here I am again
Okay, it is now a more reasonable hour (I slept until 1:30...!) and here I am online again. I need a shower and I'm tempted to go shopping (I need more shoes) but perhaps I'll resist until I get paid at the end of the week...!
Oh and ps: the food blog isn't up yet but it will be shortly :)

Today
Just got back from Grace's place (went there right after yakisoba kiddie bingo) and am not quite sleepy yet. Perhaps because I am cold.
So sorry I couldn't make it, Adamada! :(

ob
I was put off of tampons when I was in high school because the first kind I ever tried using was the kind that my mom used...ob applicator-free tampons. It freaking hurt and I never attempted tampons again. I think this had happened to more than one of my friends...what is it with mothers and their affinity for ob? Anyway, when Tampax started coming out with those Tampax Compak things they advertised by sending out free samples. I received samples but didn't bother with them since my little ob misadventure left me a little scarred (mentally, not physically). They sat in a drawer for one or two years before I decided to give them a whirl and dude...plastic applicators are the way to go.
Okay that was slightly random.
In other news, I feel like a fat cow. I think I need to do something about my eating habits or I'm going to gain five pounds. I already look slighty pregnant (which I am most definitely not) and I don't like it. My slightly belated new year resolution should be to lose 10 pounds.
