oh. em. jeeeezy
Bic Runga rocks my socks :D
Anyone who does a full set completely solo whilst very pregnant and holding a guitar and standing in high heels for the entire show to boot deserves a medal and mAdD pRoPz (with sticky caps and a "z" and everything)! And dude it was a good show!
I'll update this entry more details and with photos after I get the virginian's :)
Bic Runga is quite adorable. She has a very nice smile which doesn't ever seem to grace the covers of her CDs. ANYHOW. The Korean, the Virginian and I got there quite early after a lengthy drive on the 405. Grabbed some beers upon being admitted into the venue and then found seats up on the balcony to watch the opener. I don't think any of us took much of a liking to the duo so we went back to the bar at the front to get two more beers (for the non-drivers) and fries (for all of us) before Bic went onstage.
We got spots right in the front, stage right. I was right up against the stage so I was able to use a speaker to help steady my camera for a couple of shots. She sounds great in person. Just her and two guitars: one acoustic, one electric. Yes, she was quite pregnant, but she was wearing an empire-waist dress and was holding a guitar so you could barely tell while she was performing.
Couple things I noticed about her? She keeps time sporadically with her right foot (very evident from my vantage point) and has a tendency to toss her head back--away from the mic--when her voice gets stronger.
Anyway, after the show was done we waited around so I could try buying one of the limited number of CDs she had brought on tour with her from her mother (yes, she brought her mother with her..!) but I'm afraid I was too slow. Virginian convinced me to go back into the show room to see if she had come down to mingle and yes, she had! I got a quick photo with her and that's it but it was all good. All in all, it was an excellent show well worth the money and rush hour traffic :)
Oh, and the Virginian managed to get a photo of the playlist (some girls at the front of the crowd had snagged it post-show) which you can view here. In case you have trouble reading it, here it is:
1. Something good
2. No crying no more
3. When I see you smile
4. Bursting Through
5. The Be all & end all
6. Say after Me
7. Blue Blue Heart
8. Honest Goodbyes
9. Get some sleep
10. Drive
11. Sway
--
12. Winning arrow
After Sway she "ended" the show. She came down a minute later for an encore, of course, at which point she played "Election Night" (request from the audience) followed by "Winning Arrow". To my surprise, she didn't play many songs from Birds...probably because there is no US release of it yet?
One thing bothered me a tiny bit...when she asked for requests everyone was like "SWAY!!! PLAY SWAY!!!" Dude she's going to play Sway whether it gets requested or not after all it's her most well-known song here in the United States. But that's me being nitpicky.
And oh I'm terribly, terribly sad that Winnie was unable to make it out! After all, it was she who had informed me of Bic's coming to LA!
