Okay so some patron just came up to me at the desk and said "ni hao ma" (I don't even know if I romanized that correctly) and I was like WTF!!!!

BLAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

dumbass.

Anyway, I stared at him like I had no idea what he had just said, at which point he said "You're not Chinese?" He then asked what I was, and after I told him I was Japanese he said konbanwa.

I was hoping he didn't know any Japanese.

Anyway, I just think that the whole situation was stupid.

Plus I'm going to get my period soon. I tend to get more irritable in few days preceding that week of hell.

I just found out that he's a lawyer.

Ha.

Quickie before I start cleaning up my crap...

1. BEST BF IN THE WORLD!!! Plus his mom gave me a pineapple. Unfortunately, I have to cut it myself. She showed me how last summer. I tried doing one on my own after that. It didn't come out too well =/ Oh well. We have fresh pineapple :D

2. Kissui.net. I hadn't gotten a chance to really sit down and go through her site until recently, and I really like it :D Makes me really want to spend some time in Japan. By myself. For a few weeks. Maybe my Japanese would improve.

3. Haven't seen hs friends (other than April) in such a long time...must change that!

4. Went to dinner on Sunday. I'll get the photos up eventually...

it's a smoothie...a special smoothie!

Sooo okay. This weekend was actually pretty fun. I KILLED BILL with the bf (I need to see it again because I need to...!) then bought the Vol. 1 dvd at Best Buy...=X I swore that I wouldn't, since I know that a better "special edition" one is going to come out when Vol. 2 comes out. I have no willpower ;P ANYWAY. Neener and Leanne came over late that night. We made a "special smoothie" for the three of us to share. Watched my new dvd (:D) and ended up going to bed waaay past four. Which really sucked because we had to get up before eight.

We got to the Radisson by Knotts at around nine. It was raining =0 Dee got dropped off by her boyfriend and we all went to the lobby. We're kind of trying to start up our chapter of Sr. YBA again, and we didn't really have an advisor. We wandered around the lobby and found a bunch of people that were attending the conference. We were about to follow them onto their bus, but it turns out that it was the Mountain View/San Jose bus.

We finally found the correct shuttle and headed over to OCBC for registration.

Turns out, they were feeding us :D We all got some muffins and Neener and I got coffee. I ended up getting a lot of coffee =X

We went to morning service after that. Hoooly crap was I regretting that huge cup of coffee. The keynote speaker was speaking and I had to pee. What he was saying was good, but I was in such discomfort that I was ready to run out in the middle of it. I managed to sit through the whole thing, but as soon as he finished and they moved on to announcements, I took off.

After the service there were a bunch of workshops. For the first one we sat in a circle and talked about Buddhism. They had us write down what we liked best about (Jodo Shinshu, I assumed) Buddhism. Neener and I had almost the exact same thing. Haha. That seems to happen to us a lot.

The second workshop was a meditiation workshop. I didn't like it--I was so tired that I was starting to tip over in my chair. Plus, my stomach started to growl =\

It's a good thing they fed us lunch right after the second workshop. I was starving. We got Subway sandwich packs :D Sandwich, chips, cookie, drink. Tasted so good.

After lunch they had us do this random activity that appeared to have no point whatsoever. The aim was to build the largest structure possible using mini marshmallows, marshmallow peeps, and toothpicks. These guys that I swear had been after Neener since we sat down to breakfast came to build the marshmallow structure with us. Heheh...they were like 18 years old. Anyway...

After the whole marshmallow thing we had a question and answer session with the ministers. In all honesty, that was one of the best parts of the conference. The ministers were all very candid in their responses. The first question that the first minister drew started with "What is Buddhism's stance on sex?"

Minister: How do we feel about sex? Feels good! (insert applause here) Just be careful

The ministers all agreed and disagreed with eachother, but never got into any debates. Just stated their points of view and let it be. It was all good.

We got a break after the Q&A session. We took the bus back to the Radisson and picked up my car. By then I was really starting to feel the lack of sleep.

keahiwai-ing it in the car

When we got back to OCBC we sat and chilled in the car and listened to CDs. We were in there for well over an hour...I think. When we were in the lot we saw a catering van from some Japanese restaurant pull up. I forget the name, Sanbi?

We had dinner at 7:30ish? We almost felt bad for not changing into nicer clothes after we saw the table. But it was all good. Our table was one of the last ones to be called to get food :( Plus those guys (+ two more guys) that were following Neener came to our table with food before we were called. One of them was gentleman enough to wait until we all came back with our food before he started eating. Incidentally, he was also the token college student out of the four guys (he is a first year, the rest were high school seniors).

we paid four bucks for this ;P

After dinner was the dance. It was then that I didn't regret not changing. They had just gotten the floor waxed or something, so they made everyone without rubber-soled shoes take them off (heheh). Okay and why was there a guy who could Beyonce-bootyshake better than any girl there? He was crazy.

We went to go get our photo taken about an hour into the dance...which is why I'm all greasysweaty and nasty looking. Oh well.

One of the high school guys and some girl brought out a chair and a tablecloth to put the chair on (didn't want to scuff the floor y'know) and started crazy freaking! The girl was freaking so fast she was like a human vibrator or something. So wrong. I think she was a high school kid too.

After the dance ended, we went back to the apartment. First, we stopped at a Ralphs to pick up a six-pack of Bacardi R and some dip for the Trader Joe's (Trader Hoe's) chips that Leanne had brought the previous night. I was sooo tired, but when we all got back we toasted with our bottles and ate lots and lots of chips and dip. Dee had the bright idea to try a Trader Joe's oatmeal cookie with the sour cream/guacamole/salsa/bean dip and like the lemmings we are, we tried it too.

Neener and Dee decided (after finishing their beers and the majority of Leanne's) to try a margarita, but they didn't know what order (beer before liquor or vice versa?) would make you sick. Once we figured it out, Neener decided to write it on our small whiteboard but for some reason wrote "beef" instead of "beer". Lack of sleep/alcohol will do that to you.

We were all tired, but ended up going to sleep well past three anyway. We woke up at 7:30am so we could get ready and drive back to LA in time for service. We got to Nishi about an hour early, so we left my car in the parking lot and went to go get breakfast at McDonalds.

breakfast :D

Sausage McMuffins, orange juice, and hash browns. SOOO GOOD!

This past weekend was a lot of fun...but I'll save that for another day. When I have photos (=0)

Anyway, what I do have to say is that the dance was not what I thought it would be. It wasn't a bunch of slow dances (memories of Jr. Y and Sangha Teens....;P). There were only three, and those were towards the end. I swear that's one of the perks of having a boyfriend...there's no pressure to really meet anyone. At least, not in that way. There was one guy who was complaining that it was stupid that there were so many girls (they outnumbered the guys) yet so many guys were sitting out on the slow songs. He asked Leeners why we didn't ask anyone to dance, and she told him that we have boyfriends. He was like "Well, they aren't here, are they?"

I hate that.

I think that the other person I heard that from was one of Christy's hs friends that we ran into at Century Club last quarter. How do you respond to that without sounding bitchy?

Maybe that's why I come off as a bitch. Har har.

Leanne is our token single. It's tough being single when everyone around you is coupled up. I seriously don't know why she's still on the market. Except that all the guys around her (except her brother...but that's no help) always seem to end up being gay.

Xinlei's man made an interesting deal with me. If I peed on the floor, he'd let me cut his hair.

I decided to pass on that one.

scene from Fudoh

(link) Midori | 0 comments | 2:41 PM

Dude, okay so I just got back from seeing the Dalai Lama and Sharon Stone???

Yeah. That was kind of weird.

But anyway, it was really hard to understand what he was saying. Combination of his accent and the sound system. So mottainai. But other than that, he seemed like a supernice guy. Laughed a lot, used very deliberate hand gestures when he spoke, and wore a UCI visor the entire two hours. He seemed as if he could be one of our ministers. From what I could gather, what he was talking about was very Buddhist in general, and not Tibetian Buddhist-specific. I wish the venue wasn't so big...but then again if it wasn't then I probably wouldn't have gotten the chance to see him.

Great guy. Glad I went.

On another note, my Nishi girls are coming over tonight since we have to be at OCBC (OC Buddhist Church) early tomorrow morning. All I have to say is...I'll drink as much as Leanne drinks.

And Leanne doesn't drink...heheh.

Peace :D

There was some television ad back in the day...a Nike ad...? I don't remember. Anyway, it told us that are entire life, once it is over, will be represented by a dash.

Doesn't that suck?

I mean, birth date, dash, death date.

What's going to be on my tombstone? If I have a tombstone (I'm leaning towards cremation).

1983 - 2057

Or whenever it is that I'm going to die.

Our lives are so much more than a dash. Yes, we are miniscule in the whole scheme of things, yes, our births and deaths are significant, but they certainly aren't the most significant things in our lives...? Or at least not the only.

We should have more years on there. You know, years that were important to you. The year you got your driver's license, the year you graduated from high school/college, the year you got married, the year you got divorced, the year you came out of the closet or hell, even the year you lost your virginity if it was especially memorable. Anything goes. Whatever floats your boat, tickles your pickle, or frosts your cheerios. No one needs to know the significance of those dates, they just need to know that you weren't just cruising along that dash and waiting to die. It's not about the destination folks; it's about the journey.

I'm sure you've heard that one before.

Now it's time to go do homework. I've been unproductive all night.

That's not true. I did homework while watching TV. I did homework very very slowly while watching TV.

Bush is silly, Paris kissed Rory and Brooke is pregnant.

And that's a wrap.

I just looked at a poll regarding the ban of gay marriages in the United States and was appalled. Just over fifty percent of those who took the poll were in favor of banning homosexual marriages.

What the hell is wrong with gay marriage???

The arguments? Some are saying that it should be outlawed because the Bible says that homosexuality is a sin. Now, keep in mind that Christianity is not the only religion in the United States. There are plenty of other people who practice other religions, as well as a number of atheists and agnostics in this country. If you think that homosexuality is a sin, then that's your opinion. Don't be homosexual. There are lots of people (myself included) that don't see anything wrong with homosexuality. And really, what is wrong with it? As far as I can see, they aren't hurting anybody by happening to prefer the same sex.

Some are saying that homosexuality is a choice. I somehow doubt that...why would anyone choose to be homosexual? Who on earth would choose to be unaccepted by half of society and to have to defend their sexuality?

The other day I read about this one child, born Bruce Reimer, that had undergone a sex change after a botched cirumcision. Bruce was then renamed Brenda and raised as a girl. They never told Brenda that she had had a sex change as an infant, so as far as Brenda was concerned, she was female. However, Brenda never developed an interest in boys.

Granted, this is an unusual case, but it just seems to me that the whole situation points to the fact that sexual orientation is not necessarily a choice.

Some people just think that watching gay couples being all couple-y is disgusting. Well, I think watching ugly (and by ugly I mean so ugly you cringe when you look at them, as mean as that sounds) couples being all couple-y is unpleasant but you don't see anyone trying to put a ban on them.

Keep in mind that x amount of years ago, interracial marriages were considered taboo as well and were outlawed with the anti-miscegenation law of the early 1900's. That was stupid. But society did not accept interracial couples and that's why the law was passed.

You must must must have a look at Margaret Cho's blog. More specifically, check out her archives and her "More Letters to Margaret" (there should be three parts) entries. She has a very refreshing (albeit irreverent, even in my eyes) take on God and how God and homosexuality could peacefully coexist.

Unfortunately for both you and me, I can't seem to express myself very eloquently, and argument has never been my strong point. In any case, I hope I got my point across.

I am entitled to my own opinion, and you are certainly entitled to yours. What I don't think is fair is imposing these opinions on others when these others aren't hurting anyone.

Very un-well put, but that'll do for now.

Goo goo goo and ta ta.

Dinner/Drinks

Xinlei being cool

Since we'd heard sooo much about Styna's mom's wonderful cooking, we had the brilliant idea to go over to her house for dinner. I know, we're all freeloaders. Well, Styna wasn't kidding when she said her mom's cooking was good. Her parents commented that we looked like we hadn't eaten in days because we were scarfing everything down like we were starving. I don't know about the rest of them, but I hadn't had a real mean in a while and the food was so frickin' good. Styna's a lucky girl :)

We wanted to take a picture of Styna's dad as he walked in the front door

Styna's brother and his friends were there too. When he went to go drop them off at home, he went to go get us coffee like the well-trained little brother he is. In the meantime, they all played with the piano while I sat there and watched like the musical dunce that I am. I never took (real) piano lessons. I can't even read bass clef anymore :(

The four of us plus Styna's hyperactive dog

I think Styna's parents thought that we were crazy camera happy...especially Xinlei because Xinlei is just crazy like that.

Xinlei and Ape

Me and Styna in soft-focus (actually it's just blurry)

Anyway, after Styna's brother got back with our drinks, we headed towards April's bf's place so he could buy us booze =0. We ended up with about thirty dollars worth because they're just alcoholic like that (I'm kidding...I think). We went back to the apartment and then April and I headed back out to buy ice because we're too lame to make our own.

Playing bartender

When we got back, Apes made margaritas (strawberry?) with vodka and the three of them took a shot of vodka (including Xinlei who wasn't done with finals) to celebrate having had a good dinner and vodka.

Actually, I don't know what the shot was for. But yes. There was a shot.

Afterwards, Xinlei went to go work on a paper and the rest of us watched Moulin Rouge because April had never seen it.

And no, all of the text doens't quite correspond to the pictures. Buuuut what are YOU going to do about it?

Heheheh.

So tell me my friends...when is enough enough? What are the deal-breakers? And why the hell am I such a spineless loser?

That personality test (below) told me that subconciously, I am indecisive. That's absolut bull. I know I'm indecisive. Somehow, I can't seem to figure out what's best for me. Maybe it's my track record of bad decisions and too many what ifs...but nevermind that. I end up relying on others to somehow sway my decision or even to make it for me, which is silly because who really knows me better than me? Who's going to understand how much I can take, how far I can go (this is starting to sound pornographic), and how much I'm capable of except me?

That's the thing...I tend to either over or underestimate how much I can handle and end up completely screwed over.

Maybe things are just not meant to go right.

I'm sleepy and not thinking straight. Please disregard everything I just wrote. I'm just posting it because it would have been a waste of seven minutes if I don't.

Just came across a test on Justin's site. I'm going to give it a shot...

But before I take the test....

I'm guessing that I'm going to end up with high numbers in hypersensitivity, detachment, and anxiety.

And now we will find out.

After I take the test, of course.

BBQ from long ago...

Okay...so once upon a loooong ass time ago we had Korean BBQ at the apartment courtesty of Christy's Chul. I posted about it (March 6) but I never posted the pictures because I'm lazy. Well...here they are.

We played Taboo after we ate. I remember once at work we were talking about how guys were much better at Taboo than girls due to their one-track minds. After that night? I beg to differ. April was mos' def the best player out of us. As for me? Not so good. But it's alll good.

Thanks to Chul for the tasty shortribs :D Good stuff :)

Oh, and one more thing. Karen the bar hostess (Alien sun) kept on switching from English to Japanese to Chinese...yet everyone seemed to understand her. Go figure.

Miike Film #3

I finally watched Ichi the Killer last night. Not nearly as strange as Visitor Q, but one hell of a lot bloodier. In all honesty, I had a little trouble watching some parts of it. For instance...when Kakihara cut off the tip of his tongue? Blech. Or the needles. GAH.

Speaking of which, what is it with Miike and the needles? Remember Asami from Audition?

I digress.

Anyway, I watched the cut version. No nipple slicing in this version. However, you still get to see blood, intestines, and various body parts (including that face that you see sliding down the wall in the trailer I posted last month) flying out of a room and a man slowly peel apart and fall to the floor in two pieces after being sliced straight down the middle by Ichi (not hard to watch at all since it wasn't very realistic).

The movie was actually kind of funny in it's own way. I mean, Ichi is this dangerous killer who kills people while wearing his black rubber costume with blades on the boots, but he has the face of a little boy and spends about half of his screen time in tears. Kakihara is this bleached out yakuza guy who is both an extreme masochist and sadist who likes spearing himself and others with needles.

Now picture this: Ichi is on the roof of a building, curled up and sobbing into the ground. He is lying in two puddles. One is under his face. He is crying so much there is a fairly large waterspot on the ground. The other is a puddle of blood, which is under the foot that has been shot up. Kakihara is poised with two needles and ready to fight, but when Ichi won't stop crying and get up Kakihara kneels down besides him and begins to plead with Ichi in a cajoling voice to please get up and fight. When Ichi still won't get up, Kakihara walks off and sits down and a little boy who look who's father Ichi has just killed begins to kick Ichi. Kakihara now decides that he wants to pierce his eardrums, at which point he closes his eyes and inserts a needle in each ear.

Aaaand yes. And that is what Ichi the Killer was like.

Anyway, I'd been thinking about Visitor Q and realized that the whole thing makes sense in some demented sort of way. Ichi the Killer still doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me...especially the ending. I don't get it.

Miike is strange.
