I think she's insane...

Just my luck, the class (actually a discussion) right before Japanese (the only class I have in which attendance matters) is clear across campus. I only have ten minutes to walk to class but it usually takes me about fifteen, give or take a couple of minutes. Anyway, on Tuesday I came to class about two minutes late. I walked in unnoticed and sat down in a seat close to the door. I asked the guy behind me if the TA had taken attendance and he told me that she had. I decided that I'd wait until after class to tell her that I was here (I still wasn't really sure if she knew my name, seeing as she couldn't remember my name all of fall quarter). It was about 20 minutes into class and we were doing partner work, practicing a dialogue. My blue-eyebrowed, overly-excitable TA suddenly called my name. I said "Yes?" to which she responded "Did you come?" She stared at me expectantly, waiting for an answer. I stared back at her, not quite sure what to say and someone somewhere behind me said "Tell her no."

I always thought she was strange.

There was a pile of powder by my car this morning and it reminded me of my salt story.

For CSF appreciation day, we always go to Six Flags. My junior year, this happened around the same time we were doing our partner experiments in AP bio. My partner and I were salting guppies, so I had been bringing a Ziploc full of some sort of special salt to school in my backpack almost every day. Well, we got to Magic Mountain. They have pretty thorough security checks there. They put everyone through a metal detector and search everyone's bags before they allowing them to enter the park. Just imagine what the security guard must have thought when he looked into my backpack and found a bag of powdery white stuff. He gave me this look and I was thinking "Oh crap..." so I told him it was salt and of course that sounded like a lame excuse because who the hell carries a plastic bag full of salt in her backpack? Buuut since I'm probably one of the least suspicious looking people around he just asked me why I was carrying salt in my bag. I told him about our bio lab and he just said "Ah...I see..." He let me keep my bag of salt. He also asked if I wanted to study biology in college. I told him no.

Apes and I stayed up waaay too late last night watching Shakira shake what her momma gave her on MTV.com. She's the only celebrity I've seen so far that somehow manages to be very sexy yet completely adorable at the same time. Some people have all the luck.

I made spam musubi last night. Thanks to all of those fundraisers, not only can I make them, I can make them in bulk. I have the pictures to prove I actually made food that looks edible, but I can't find my card reader so I can't upload.

Song of the moment: Beware of the Boys, Punjabi MC and Jay-z. Took me forever to find out what the title of that song was (thanks Ra :)). I wrote in "Bhangra" in the genre field of the iTunes to prove that I actually learned something in Asian Am. Studies last year.

Going to go eat leftover spam. I had one this afternoon and the seaweed stuck to my lips. Had to scrape it off before going to class. I looked diseased.

My fortune

I'm so tired. I also have a nasty looking splotchy red mark on my shoulder/armpit from lugging my laptop around in my bookbag.

I still haven't finished my lab.

Okay anyway one more thing about last Thursday...

I was at the club to dance and have a good time because although I act a fool on the dance floor and end up looking ridiculous, I have a good time doing it (so there). SO...

I went with my three roommates. All have boyfriends. As do I. Well, since we didn't want to dance with any strange guys we danced with each other. Unfortunately, girls dancing with girls has become so much of a cliché that there's even a song about it. Those were not my intentions. I just needed someone to dance with =P

One of the funniest things I saw that night was the pseudolesbian pair of girls up in the hanging cage-y thing (it wasn't really a cage but lets just call it one). Before that pair there was another pseudolesbian pair that was all grinding up against eachother and basically giving all the guys an eyeful. The pair that came after them was...well...confused. They were kinda standing around up there as if they had no idea what was going on and then proceeded to dance with each other halfheartedly. Nice.

More proof that Japanese folks are weird

I still don't know how to do my homework :(

It's the riceguru's birthday today :)

Stuffed microbes???

I have too much homework and too much ketchup.

I've been trying to start this assignment for about three days now. I just figured out how to run the freakin' progam on Thursday ;P

I took a lot of ketchup from Carl's. I thought I'd use it all but I have six packets left over.

It's my host's birthday! Not the domain, but the actual person. And boy is he OLD. 24 years old baby!

It's also Chris F's birthday. He's 18 I believe. Happy birthday to him too :)

We did calligraphy in Japanese today. In my second year of J-school (I was seven or eight years old) we did calligraphy. I mean, we had to make our own ink and everything. They had us do various kanji. I vaguely remember having to do gakkoo or something. Or maybe not. We had to do something. Anyway, the teacher was looking at all of our work and she said mine was ugly :( She was mean.

I can't say that today's scribbles were any better than those from twelve years ago, but at least no one asked me why they were so ugly.

I mean hurt.

blah.

The club curse has been broken! Granted we (my roommates and I) had to wait for an hour in the cold amid cigarette smoke and azns but we made it and it was fun. We went to Century Club over on the westside. Honestly, it was smaller than I thought. There were a couple of dance floors, one was completely packed and we could hardly move, so we headed over to a smaller and less crowded room off to the side. We left at around 1:45, just early enough to avoid the mad rush when the club closed at two. I was so pooped that I just washed my face and went to bed, but I overslept my cell phone alarm so now I have stanky cigarette-smoke hair until I finish at 5:30 today :(

Man that sentence made no sense. All of my communication skills have gone down the crapper.

My bones hur.

i'm in class (sort of) and i'm boooooooooooooooooorrrrrrrred

input is faster on my laptop than on my mac.

I'm at work right now and I feel really crappy. On top of my eyes bugging me and the stuffiness of the room, my arms are sore from playing with Leanne's Eye Toy on Saturday night. Yeap, I'm sore from playing a video game.

I'm so lame.

(link) Midori | 0 comments | 9:39 PM

Mmm mm mmm I'm eating homemade tamales. My dad's cousin made them.

I forgot to mention that I finally saw LOST IN TRANSLATION (yay) with two of my roommates :) Stynalicious was probably the only one who really got everything since she was the only one who can really understand Japanese. Now I just need to see Last Samurai which I keep hearing is really really good (albeit not entirely historically correct). Was going to go with Kit but we haven't gone yet :(

I think bf likes Jimmy Choos. He went to the Saks website and showed me the shoes he wanted to get me (even though they were clearly out of his price range). He's too funny...but he does have pretty good taste :X

Have to go back to school and work today. Really looking forward to it ;P

Oh yeah, last weekend we (Sr. YBA) had to go in to fry stuff for a luncheon. I had to use one of the extra aprons in the storage closet since I didn't have one of my own. My grandpa saw that I didn't have my own apron (the one I had on was too large) so he went home and made one for me :)

Lina's 21st

5:05pm Was running late to Leanne's house because I had to get gas, but managed to make it there just a few minutes late. All we had to do was get the card signed and put together the remainder of her gift.

5:30pm Leanne put the finishing touches on the card. We had already gotten a call from Denise and her boyfriend telling us that they were running late and that they'd meet us at the restaurant.

5:35pm Leanne and I left her place to head over to Buca di Beppo in Pasadena. Again, I thought I'd be late but when we got there, it turned out that not enough of the party was there so we couldn't get seated.

6:42pm We got situated as soon as enough of the party arrived. Lina's roommate Shannon went around the table to take photos of all of the guests.

7:12pm It was a while before we got to order since so many people weren't there, so we just ordered some appetizers (three plates of garlic cheese bread mmmmm) and salad. The "special" salad had waaay too many rasins in it and cheese that looked like tofu. The mashed rasins looked like bacon bits. Overall? Too sweet. Oh yeah, and the Caesar tasted like fish.

8:23pm Lina and Shannon had brought lots of plastic beads for the girls (we all got at least two strands each) and plastic Michael Jackson-style fedoras for the guys. Check out the birthday girl with all of her bling bling!

8:23pm The area we were in was pretty crazy. There were lots of birthdays with huge groups of people, so everyone ended up singing and yelling and toasting each other. The table behind us was pretty rambunctious. You can see their birthday girl sitting behind our birthday girl.

8:28pm Shannon made a toast to Neener and everyone in the room (including the smaller tables and the old folks sitting behind us) raised their glasses.

8:51pm After cake, it was time for the birthday girl to get her drink on! Since she was technically still 20 (her birthday is on the 18th and we were celebrating it on the 17th) Alan went to go get her a drink. What did he get her? AMF!!!

8:55pm The old folks behind us were leaving, so their birthday boy and our birthday girl took a picture together. The dollar was from the guy. It was supposed to be Vegas money (teehee).

9:21pm After she finished the whole freakin' thing it was time for her to take a shot =0. Alan went to go get her a shot of tequila(!) with lime. He told me it was very smooth and that even though he's "not a drinker" (uh-huh) he was able to down a quadruple shot of it on his 21st birthday. Neener went for the lime immediately after downing the shot while the birthday girl sitting behind her (I think her name was Sepi) yelled "she doesn't need a lime!!!"

9:25pm A few minutes later the crazy group behind Lina left. They insisted on taking pictures with her too, so Sepi and some guy took a picture and the guy kissed her on the cheek. After that Sepi said "Hey, how come I don't get to give her a kiss???" so they took another picture. My stupid camera shoots too slowly when I use flash so I didn't get any of the action :(

9:51pm We headed over to Sushi Roku after leaving Buca's. A few of us somehow managed to get lost, so the rest of us waited outside and took pictures.

Leanne: Buddha's wet! Let's touch him!

Alan: (watching us take the photo) You're so not going to get to Nirvana

Lina's boyfriend was working there, so we were able to get in and get her drinks almost immediately.

10:06pm The interior was really nice. We probably looked ridiculously out of place with our plastic hats and Mardi Gras beads. I kind of felt funny about taking flash photos but whatever. We stayed long enough to watch Lina drink a sake bomb and then Denise, Andy, Leanne and I left.

Drink total: 1 AMF, 1 shot tequila, 1 lemon drop, 2 sake bombs.

I saw her this morning. She said that she was still feeling the effects of the alcohol and that she had thrown up on the table some time after the second sake bomb. Not that I blame her. That was one helluva lot of alcohol.

I have yet to write about Hoho's 21st birthday. I need to prepare the photos, so that'll have to wait until later :)

Today is Neener's 21st birthday!!!

I had another freakin' dream about people trying to kill me. Last week it was some guy that I haven't seen in ages. Let's call him Wombat. He and two of his friends were chasing me through a mall with tomahawks and hatchets. Last night it was bunch of people hunting and killing Battle Royale style. I woke up before they got me.

There are two men that are in their mid-late thirties that are taking LARC at the same time that I am. There is also a guy with really nice lips. Very smooth. I'm jealous. There is also a strange fellow in Japanese. He is indeed very strange.

And I art sleepy.

Teen Girl Squad!!!

I met this guy who sticks his tongue out when he's teasing or joking with you.

For some reason, I felt violated.

Hey, what happened to women's lib, "Sisters are doin' it for themselves" and the whole enchilada?

That was in response to this post, where I was lauding DJ for being such a nice guy. Well, I was reading Amabelle's post (really, really old post) on the subject and I'd have to agree with her point of view. It's just courtesy. I'd write more but my head isn't really working right now.

I'll be back...later. Maybe.

Happiness in a nutshell....and this time it's a small one.

I find it rather sad that weight loss can really impact the happiness of a woman and "victories by their favourite sports teams" can so strongly impact the happiness of men. I guess it's true though.

Ah well.

2003 in a (very big) nutshell (taken from Damon)
1. What did you do in 2003 that you'd never done before?
Took a trip with Kit :)

2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
I don't remember making any...I'm not big on the new year's resolution thing. I usually make new quarter's resolutions =P

3. Did anyone close to you give birth? Don't think so

4. Did anyone close to you die?
Yeah. I have a feeling that a lot of people can answer yes to this question this year =\

5. What countries did you visit?
Ermmm...no foreign countries.

6. What would you like to have in 2004 that you lacked in 2003?
money <--- haha wooorrrd

7. What date from 2003 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
I can't think of one right now...which I suppose means that no such date exists.

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
2003 was kinda crappy

9. What was your biggest failure?
My graaaades

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Injury? The worst was probably my chopped finger.

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Can't think of any memorable purchases...don't think I had enough money to make any ;P

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Not mine

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
Haha...I saw her yesterday on campus...on her cell phone as usual.

14. Where did most of your money go?
Food, books, and Christmas gifts.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Every time a quarter ended I'd get really, really excited about the quarter ending. Oh, that plus moving out of Park West ;D

16. What song will always remind you of 2003?
Probably have to wait a while before I know the answer to that one.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
i. happier or sadder? Probably sadder...
ii. thinner or fatter? I feel fatter but the scale says that I'm the same.
iii. richer or poorer? I'm not sure...haven't paid my credit card bill yet so some of the money in my account is money I really don't have. I've come to dislike credit cards.

18. What do you wish you'd done more of?
Studying.

19. What do you wish you'd done less of?
Crying.

20. How will you be spending Christmas?
Eating.

Kit. I'm not a huge fan of the phone.

With my apartment and its contents :)

23. What was your favorite TV program?
Will and Grace and Sex and the City :D

24. Do you hate anyone now that you didn't hate this time last year?
I don't think I do...

25. What was the best book you read?
I don't remember what kind of recreational reading I did last year. I must say that the assigned novels for As. Am weren't too bad.

26. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Keahiwai :D

27. What did you want and get?
My summer job. Thought it was going to fall through for a little while.

28. What did you want and not get?
A 3.5. urgh

29. What was your favorite film of this year?
KILL BILL!!!

30. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
Went to school from 11 until 9:30, went to lab, then fought with the bf. There's a reason why I hate my birthday.

31. What would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Better grades. And a better roommate (apartmentmate) for the first half of 2003.

32. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2003?
I hope I'll be warm enough...?

33. What kept you sane?
Haha...I wasn't sane.

34. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
I never was into any celebrities/public figures.

35. What political issue stirred you the most?
I'm oblivious :X

36. Who did you miss?
*sigh* I don't know...

37. Who was the best new person you met?
Who did I meet last year...?

38. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2003: I never seem to really learn. One year older and none the wiser.

39. Quote a song lyric that sums up your year:
my milkshake brings all the boys to the yard...;D

I'm kidding.

I think I lost my Japanese book.

There is now a fellow standing in front of a column in front of the MRC with his arms crossed. He appears to be very focused on the column. As far as I can see, there is nothing of interest on the column.

There's a new reference librarian here with perfectly enormous hair that all but obscures her face. She is helping a student right now so I am taking the opportunity to gawk at her without her noticing.

Happy 18 month to us :)

I've been back in OC since yesterday morning. Had to work yesterday and today.

Going to have dinner and go to a movie tonight. Or at least I hope.

Photos soon to come. Back in Newport where my card reader is :)

(link) Midori | 0 comments | 12:57 PM

-Battle Royale on dvd
-All volumes of the Battle Royale manga
-Kill Bill vols. 1 and 2 on dvd
-Stanley Kubrick's films (starting w/ Clockwork Orange)
-All of Banana Yoshimoto's books (in English). I think I have all of them but I'm not sure.
-Keahiwai's CDs (I have their first one)
And that's why I'm going to be broke.

Still need to see Last Samurai and Lost in Translation.

Today a couple of Mormon guys came to the door on a mission from God (or so they said).

Mormon#: Here is the Book of Mormon...it's our gift to you. It's like the bible.

Me:Oh...thanks?

M#1: Do you read the bible?

Me: No.

M#1: Do you have a belief in Christ?

Me: No. (I wasn't being snarky I was just trying to be honest)

M#1: (Gets shocked look on his face) Oh...umm...

Mormon#2: (Looking slightly taken aback) Are you...um...are you...uhh...

I think it was at this point where #2 asked me if I went to "uh...that university over there" while motioning behind him with his hand. Anyway, I was trying to think of a way to get rid of them nicely (although after my declaration of my heathenism they didn't seem inclined to stay long) since I wanted to unpack before going to work. Before they left, they asked me if I was going to read the book and I told them that one of my roommates might (which, in hindsight, was probably the wrong thing to say) and then they asked me if there was a good time for them to come back to see if I had read the book! I decided that "never" would probably be a bad answer, so instead I smiled and said "uhhh...I don't know".

Well that was my adventure for today.

On Monday I met April and Sara for drinks at Starbucks, after which we headed over to Rite-Aid. April got some Aveeno and Sara and I picked up a couple of....*ahem*...bridal magazines (I'm not saying what for I don't want to scare anyone ;D). We headed over to Hollie's afterward to have a girls night in.

I've been shopping too much.

I'm sick of Abercrombie guilt...only because I've discovered their kids line. Not only is it cheaper but it looks like it will actually fit me. The sad thing is, I think I'd fit into some of their smalls ;P I've been resisting buying anything new from them ever since the whole T-shirt fiasco, but I'm starting to waver.

I'm hungry. Haven't had anything to eat all day. I could use a Trader Joe's truffle (even though my uncle says eating one would be like eating Crisco). They're damn yummy.

I think I was much more amusing in high school than I am now. Check out the archives (these are really old).

I feel like watching a movie. I want to see Last Samurai and Lost in Translation.

I'm bored and my arm hurts. Victoria's Secret is having their semi-annual sale today but believe it or not, I think I'm sick of underwear shopping. Never thought I'd live to see the day.

hi

(link) Midori | 0 comments | 11:39 AM

The worst part about being Japanese is the food. The nishime, the sweet red bean soup, the little sticky dried fishes that I used to love but now make me feel a bit squeamish, all of that Japanese new year's food. Blech.

On the upside we got a sushi plate. Yummy.

I make myself laugh. Sometimes I laugh with me and sometimes I laugh at me.

It's a good skill to have.

(link) Midori | 0 comments | 2:14 AM

Happy new year everyone.

For some reason I feel weird about this new year. I feel like I have unfinished business, but I can't imagine what.

I went to Kit's last night. Went home at around one. Wanted to call up some people except I was falling asleep on the way back. Decided to just go home.

Something doesn't feel right.

But I didn't hit any cars and nobody's dying, so I think I'm off to a better start than I was last year.
