earthquizzles!
Six or seven years ago
April and I were awakened at the ungodly hour of 7:15ish in the morning (ungodly for dorm-dwelling college freshmen who do not have class until 10ish) by the freakishly loud fire alarm. At first we tried to ignore it and go back to sleep but it was too loud...and it would not stop.
"Do we have to get up?" I asked, still in bed with my eyes closed.
"I wonder if it's a real alarm."
"I don't know. Probably not."
"Maybe we should get up...it might be an actual fire." April got out of bed and peeped outside to see what was going on. No one seemed to be trying to evacuate and there was no sign of fire so she just closed the door to our suite to muffle the alarm a little. We later reflected that our reaction to the fire alarm was probably not ideal, seeing that it took us ten minutes for one of us to get out of bed to see what was going on. We found out later that it was a real alarm, not a drill. Someone had burned something in the kitchen and the alarm had gone off as a result.
I posted that story since, well, my reaction to the earthquake was kind of similar :P When the rumbling started I thought it was the usual building-rumbling that happens every now and then due to, well, I don't know what it's due to but it happens sometimes. But then the shaking got a little stronger and didn't stop and I realized that it might be a real earthquake. Even so, I stayed put since it didn't seem like it was too bad and there didn't seem to be any imminent danger to myself. I think just about everyone at work reacted similarly because there seemed to be no movement (aside from the obvious building-shaking) anywhere in the office.
I'm really sad that VV missed the earthquake, though. He moved to California maybe two years after Northridge and there hasn't been a really significant quake since.
So everything is all right with me. Brady told me some stuff in my apartment fell (I suspect it was my bar stuff...glasses and whatnot) but he said that the junk he had on the floor cushioned it so it's all good. Nothing in VV's house fell, not even the wine glasses I had standing in the sink.
I'm feeling super nasty and bloated and crampy right now. And I'm craving cake. Oh and I took my temperature yesterday morning after waking up with aching legs and the thermometer told me that I was 96.5 degrees or something weird like that.
Maybe I'll bake tonight.

Friday Five for the second time this week (and still not on a Friday...but closer!)
1. Did you get an allowance as a kid, and if so, how much was it?
Yes! Well, sort of. I got money for doing chores around the house. The amount increased a bit every year as I got older. I think the highest it got was $7 a week?
2. How old were you when you had your first job, and what was it?
Thirteen. Work experience @ Macy as a tutor. (Remember those days?!)
3. Which do you do better: save money or spend money?
I used to be a pretty good saver. Now I'm a really good spender ;P (Well, I do save still but just not as well as I used to.)
4. Are people more likely to borrow money from you, or are you more likely to borrow from them?
I'm more likely to borrow from others...I never seem to have cash on me and sometimes you just need cash. Plus I hate lending money...but only because I hate having to ask for it back should the person forget that they borrowed :P
5. What's the most expensive thing you've ever bought?
This is going to sound fearfully shallow and frivolous but I think the most expensive thing I've ever bought might have been a handbag (and I say/type this rather shamefacedly because yes, I own a purse more expensive than any one piece of furniture in my apartment).

Happy birthday!
Happy birthday to my blog :D It's 8 years old today!!
And in honor of this special day, I present a link to my old archives!
Which aren't really interesting but whatever.
Quite frankly I think it's omega awesome that I have kind of a history all written out (and photographed!) because I freaking hate forgetting stuff that happened, stuff I did, places I've gone, etc. etc. Sometimes I wish I'd documented things in a little more detail, but I've gotta say, what I have now isn't too shabby. So what if it's not that interesting to anyone else? Haha!
In other news, played uno today. I won! Well, sort of.
Am excited for the weekend (mini-holiday with the VV!) but not excited about next week's VV-lessness since he's going on a business trip (yadda blah) M-Th.
I need to get to bed soon.

fierce like christian
[10:59 AM] vv: my hair is fierce today
[11:00 AM] vv: i dont want to put my headphones on because i will mess it up
[11:00 AM] vv: but i want to listen to music
[11:00 AM] vv: this is my dilemna
I made him watch Project Runway with me last season and ever since we saw Christian declare that his hair had to be "extra fierce" on some particular day (cut to a scene containing Christian + straightening iron) he likes to tell me that his hair is "fierce" when he's having a self-proclaimed good hair day.
[11:00 AM] me: earbuds?
[11:00 AM] me: compromise
[11:01 AM] me: sound quality for hair quality

heh just kidding guys
Friday Five...on a MONDAY!
1. What drink wakes you up best in the morning?
Usually I just drink water in the morning. I start off most weekdays with a 24oz bottle (for before, during, and after my workout)
2. During the day, what do you drink to keep going?
Weekdays == genmaicha. Weekends == VODKA
(ahaha just kidding)
3. Do you drink the recommended 8 glasses of water per day? Why/why not?
Er, well I think the recommended water intake for someone my size is closer to the low 50s...then I guess add 1 cup for days I work out. So 50-60 depending on the day? I'd say I usually drink more than that, actually :P
4. What are the ingredients of your favorite mixed drink? (Doesn't have to be alcoholic!)
Bellinis or my blueberries and cream thing :D Bellinis just have peach juice and sparkling wine. The blueberry drink has Trader Joe's sparkling blueberry juice + vanilla vodka (sooo good)
5. Are you a coffee drinker? How do you take your coffee, if so?
Used to be. I liked Vietnamese coffee the best I think. Unless I was eating something sweet (like cake), in which case I'd drink black coffee.
Hahaha I don't know why I did that whole vodka thing. I don't even care for vodka so much anymore (my blueberry cocktail thing doesn't count because you can't even taste the vodka!) I'm tired and have been feeling a little out-of-sorts healthwise. I got a pretty nasty headache whilst working out today (hasn't happened in a looong time) and have been getting little headaches and brief dizzy spells for the past couple of weeks. And I've been coughing. Eep!
Last week:
- April turned 25
- My car turned 100,000 (miles)
- VV and I had dinner with Sara and Damon (thanks for having us over guys!)
- Attended a gallery thing and bought t-shirts
This week:
- My blog turns 8!
- Going to see Dark Knight
- VV and I are going on our first minibreak :D Actually, it's not the first time we've stayed overnight someplace, but the only other time was when we went to Disneyland and stayed at the Disney hotel but that so doesn't count because it's about 3 feet away from my apartment (okay so I exaggerate but still it's pretty darn close) We're just going to Camarillo for some shopping and lots and lots of eating!
Allergies are going haywire!

a look back
Once in AP English I was given a textbook (remember how in high school we didn't have to pay for books and totally took it for granted?!) with a post-it in it that read "Do not peel/or thou dost become a heel". (Or was it "becomest"?)
I might have blogged about that already but it's been so long that I've forgotten and there's a good chance that you've forgotten too.
This past weekend was a bit hectic but good. Pictures and pictures and pictures will be posted on Flickr once I get caught up to this weekend. I'm still working through last weekend's photos!
Also, OCBC obon next weekend. I might take VV on Saturday for a bit since he couldn't make it to Nishi's obon last weekend.

Evening
It's nearly 10pm now, I've finished making my dinner...my second attempt at Korean-style spinach. It came out better this time, I think, since I did a better job at draining the spinach before putting it in the pan w/ the other ingredients.
Dinner is waiting in the fridge (I want to cool it down a bit because the banchan I get is never steaming hot and I sort of want to emulate that feel) and I'm surfing the internet with a glass of moscato to the left of my laptop (same glass that's to the left of this entry, yes it is). The rim is marred by lip gelee in Bare, and yes I'm using a souvenir wineglass. This year's Taste of Huntington Beach. VV's other wineglass are on the top shelf (very inconvenient, I'd have to get a stool or hop onto the counter to retrieve one) and this was in the dishwasher (which I can reach quite easily) so souvenir wineglass it is.
Hope you all had a nice day. I think I'm really stressed out (feeling highstrung sort of) but I can't figure out why..!

zoooomg
Bic Runga concert was sooo awesome. Thanks to Winnie for the heads up and super duper thanks to April who helped me out w/ directions when I stupidly directed VV and myself to the old location ;P Blahh!
When I first got Winnie's comment about the concert I got superexcited and called Largo right away to book without even checking the show details, so imagine my pleasant surprise to discover on Sunday, when looking at the Largo event calendar, that Flight of the Conchords was going to be playing that same show! Fo SERIOUS and dude not only did they play, but Bic also did guest vocals for one of their songs and they did some backups/harmonies for her song "The Be All End All" seriously all they needed was to have our 45cent international man of mystery with the "steamy" accent (Nikhil!) doing his sexy dance onstage and I would have been in seventh kiwi heaven.
Anyhoozles, got to bed at 1AM last night since the fecking freeway was closed again and we had to detour to the 91. Didn't go to the gym. Must go tomorrow.

the long weekend and too much alcohol
Yesterday was the second Sunday in a row in which I peeled myself plus my hangover out of bed in the AM only to chase it with wine and soju shooters come PM. This. Must. Stop.
I had a lovely long four-day weekend (thanks to alternative work weeks) that I kicked off with some birthday drinks w/ Huntz + friends at Tangiers on Wednesday night and finished up at Bodega (our new favorite hangout) with Leanne and Lina + 1. And, of course, there was all the madness in between due to some bitch our dear friend Xinlei being in SoCal for the weekend :D
Did some good eating, lots of drinking, had a very fuzzy Saturday night (apparently I bit April sometime that evening which is something I do not remember at all ohhh it was like being 21 all over again) and a very low-key 4th w/ the VV (which was omega nice).
Now it's time for detox and recovery. I have be up and functioning at 100% by this coming weekend!
