earthquizzles!

Six or seven years ago
April and I were awakened at the ungodly hour of 7:15ish in the morning (ungodly for dorm-dwelling college freshmen who do not have class until 10ish) by the freakishly loud fire alarm. At first we tried to ignore it and go back to sleep but it was too loud...and it would not stop.

"Do we have to get up?" I asked, still in bed with my eyes closed.

"I wonder if it's a real alarm."

"I don't know. Probably not."

"Maybe we should get up...it might be an actual fire." April got out of bed and peeped outside to see what was going on. No one seemed to be trying to evacuate and there was no sign of fire so she just closed the door to our suite to muffle the alarm a little. We later reflected that our reaction to the fire alarm was probably not ideal, seeing that it took us ten minutes for one of us to get out of bed to see what was going on. We found out later that it was a real alarm, not a drill. Someone had burned something in the kitchen and the alarm had gone off as a result.

I posted that story since, well, my reaction to the earthquake was kind of similar :P When the rumbling started I thought it was the usual building-rumbling that happens every now and then due to, well, I don't know what it's due to but it happens sometimes. But then the shaking got a little stronger and didn't stop and I realized that it might be a real earthquake. Even so, I stayed put since it didn't seem like it was too bad and there didn't seem to be any imminent danger to myself. I think just about everyone at work reacted similarly because there seemed to be no movement (aside from the obvious building-shaking) anywhere in the office.

I'm really sad that VV missed the earthquake, though. He moved to California maybe two years after Northridge and there hasn't been a really significant quake since.

So everything is all right with me. Brady told me some stuff in my apartment fell (I suspect it was my bar stuff...glasses and whatnot) but he said that the junk he had on the floor cushioned it so it's all good. Nothing in VV's house fell, not even the wine glasses I had standing in the sink.

I'm feeling super nasty and bloated and crampy right now. And I'm craving cake. Oh and I took my temperature yesterday morning after waking up with aching legs and the thermometer told me that I was 96.5 degrees or something weird like that.

Maybe I'll bake tonight.
